Views on UPC expressed ahead of today’s Competitiveness Council meeting

29.09.2016

As reported here, the topic of the proposed unitary patent and Unified Patent Court (UPC) system is on the agenda of today’s EU Competitiveness Council meeting, and in advance of this meeting several letters have been sent from organisations expressing their views on what should now happen following the result of the UK’s EU referendum.  Those sending letters include: BUSINESS EUROPE , MEDEF (Movement of the Enterprises of France), UJUB (Union for the Unified Patent Court, a French non-governmental organisation), EUROCHAMBRES and UEAPME (representing Europe’s SMEs), and a group of 20 companies.  The message from all organisations is, in summary, that member states should start work without delay to enable implementation of the UPC system, with some specifically expressing support for finding a solution to include the UK.  These letters are in addition to one from the German Bar Association reported here.
