Following the vote in the Denmark’s recent referendum being in favour of ratifying the UPC Agreement, on 20 June 2014 Denmark deposited its instrument of ratification in Brussels with the General Secretariat of the Council of the European Union. Denmark is the fifth member state to deposit its instrument of ratification and so complete the final step required for ratification to have effect under Article 89(1) UPC Agreement (the others having done so being Austria, France, Sweden and Belgium).
Denmark will establish a local division of the UPC in Copenhagen, with Danish and English being the languages of the proceedings. It is understood that a reason that Denmark did not wish to participate in the Nordic-Baltic regional division of the UPC (consisting of Sweden, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania) was because that will operate only in English.
