Richard specialises in contentious intellectual property matters with a particular emphasis on patent litigation in the telecommunications, engineering and electronics sectors.
Richard has represented clients in proceedings in the High Court, the Court of Appeal and at the EPO and is a qualified advocate before all UK courts. A significant part of Richard’s patent litigation practice involves coordinating litigation before the UK Courts with parallel litigation in the USA and Europe (particularly Germany) and advising on international patent litigation strategy. As well as advising clients in relation to proceedings before courts, Richard’s practice includes the interaction of patents and FRAND obligations, freedom to operate advice, patent validity analysis, IPR enforcement strategy and the interaction of IPRs and digital media.
Richard’s scientific background enables him quickly to understand complex technical issues and provide clear intelligible advice. His technical experience covers 3G telecommunications, smart phone technology, magnetoresistive sensors and extends to electrical backplane connectors and oxide coated cutting tools used in heavy engineering. He also has experience of industrial design and packaging in the food and drinks sector.
As well as preparing cases for trial and managing discovery processes, Richard has assisted senior trial counsel in a case involving 3G telecommunications patents. Richard also has “in-house” experience having spent time on secondment to the legal department at a leading pharmaceutical company.
